Antique four poster bed, Colonial four poster bed (Ref: 03)
A large
size four poster bed again an original colonial antique four poster dating
from 1840, this over sized four poster has an abundance of beautiful carving, the amount of
skilled work involved in producing this impressive bed is
unimaginable. This bed has a cornice which is not shown in the photographs
below.
These four poster beds were built in India for the Generals and officers of the British Raj due to
trading restriction they have been stored away for over a hundred years. They
are carved from very hardwood usually mahogany or rosewood in the Victorian style demanded
by Queen Victoria's high ranking officers. They were made very large sometimes
super king - we suppose because you would have wanted to spread out during the
heat of an Indian summer. Originally they would have been covered with mosquito
net but look fabulous with traditional drapes, with muslin for a modern touch or
can be left undraped.
The exact dimensions of this bed will be available when it arrives from India
but more than likely the mattress size would be around 5 foot 6 x 6 foot 6.

condition report- Wonderful carving on this particular bed, in very good original condition with good patina and rich colouring needing very little restoration may be only cleaning. It has the usual signs signs of age but this bed has been well cared for over the last 160 years. The bed is all original. The outdoor photographs below show the bed in India. As with all these beds restoration is kept to a minimum - careful cleaning and polishing conserving the beautiful patina and giving a natural sheen.
