Victorian pollard oak dresser, side table, buffet (ref no: 6)
A magnificent pollard oak dresser carved from solid oak with wonderful figuring and rich brown oak colour. This is a high quality piece of large proportion measuring 78 inches wide x 27 inches deep x 81 inches high. c1850, It has its original glass which is in good condition and has a cellarette fitment to one of the cupboards.
Pollard oak is found mostly in England but also found frequently in France. It is diseased oak which explains the very beautiful figuring in the wood, red rot can occur in all of the Oak subspecies, if this does not lead to decay of the heartwood, leaving the wood sliceable we have pollard or brown oak. To obtain high quality Brown Oak or pollard oak veneers the entire heartwood must be fungi infested which turns the heartwood dark brown. Very rare and in especially high demand are pollard oak veneers.
